The Christian Sabbath Hebrews 4:9-11 “There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.” Everyone desires true rest. However, money, health, success, and possessions alone cannot bring peace of mind. This is because, the moment humans turned away from God, they lost true rest due to sin. After completing creation, God rested on the seventh day. This was not a rest taken out of fatigue, but a rest of joy in having completed all His work. However, due to sin, Adam and Eve severed their fellowship with God and lost the rest of Eden. God delivered the people of Israel from Egypt and granted them rest in the land of Canaan, but this was a foreshadowing of the true rest to come. The author of Hebrews states that if the rest given by Joshua had been perfect rest, God would not have promised another Sabbath. Jesus Christ said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” True rest can be found not in the world, but only in Jesus Christ. Although Christians already enjoy rest within the grace of forgiveness of sins and salvation, they live with the hope of enjoying perfect, eternal rest in the new heaven and new earth. Therefore, we must strive to enter into rest by holding fast to the Lord to the end through faith and obedience. The Christian life is to entrust all worries to God, enjoy the peace given in Christ, and live a life of hope for the eternal Kingdom of God. Key Message True rest begins with the restoration of our relationship with God. Jesus Christ is our eternal rest. Although Christians already enjoy rest, they live hoping for perfect rest in the future. Meditation Questions In what am I seeking true rest? Am I entrusting all my worries to Jesus today? Am I living by faith, looking forward to the rest of the eternal Kingdom of God?
