Today we will discuss Constitution Murder Day, the Emergency. We will discuss this issue because on June 25, 1975, the then Indira Gandhi government declared a state of emergency in the country. June 25 is a dark day in the history of independent India. By imposing the Emergency, the then Indira Gandhi government stifled the freedom of expression of Indian citizens in independent India. More importantly, this period of emergency witnessed the government's abuse of power. During the nearly 21 months of the Emergency, Indira Gandhi's government issued 48 ordinances, amended the Constitution several times, curtailed the powers of the judiciary, and suspended all fundamental rights guaranteed to ordinary citizens and the media. People were jailed for protesting. Therefore, June 25 is celebrated as Constitution Murder Day. This day serves as a solemn memory and inspires us to uphold democratic values.
