One Take Wednesday: Status Quo by Joseph Gullerud

“Status quo” is a song about what stops us from examining what we need to examine and changing what we need to change. If you any of these words resonate with you, use this as a springboard to make a change, any change, that needs to be made. Write that poem. Ask for that raise. Take that step, whatever it is! I release these weekly One Take Wednesday videos as a way to practice “playing live” (or as close to it as I can get regularly as a boring middle-aged husband and father with a full-time job). It also keeps me from spending way too long on trying to get that elusive “perfect take”! Sometimes I will record several of these in one go then release them later, but they are each one take. I did cheat a bit on this one on the editing side: I cut out a 1.5 second stumble on the second chorus, so you’ll see a quick flicker of the video at that point, but otherwise it’s all from the same take. The officially released version of this song has vocals by the one and only Melanie Orton, my inspiration and my partner in crime.
