The goddess Hera hated Alcides because he was born from her husband Zeus cheating on her with a mortal woman, and so she spent his entire life tormenting and trying to kill him. At one point, Hera drove Alcides insane and had him kill his wife and child. In an attempt to appease her, the Oracle of DelphiWP had Alcides change his name to Heracles, meaning "glory of Hera". He was then instructed by Apollo to undergo the Twelve LaborsWP to repent for killing his family.
