Living on the Edge: Buying and Building Property on the Oregon Coast
Produced by Oregon Sea Grant and the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development in 2005, this video is divided into four sections: 00:00 Overview 01:47 Beach cycles -- This section explains the seasonality of sand movement and storms and why erosion occurs. 06:23 A dynamic coast -- This section describes how the seafloor off Oregon is sliding under the continent and lifting up the coast in certain places and how the last major earthquake in the area was in 1700. It also talks about which regions of Oregon's coast are rising faster or slower than the global sea level. 10:23 Sound development -- This section discusses how prospective buyers can do due diligence, which can include talking to the local planning office and building inspectors, examining coastal hazard maps, having a geotechnical specialist inspect the site, and finding out if protective barriers to prevent erosion are allowed. It also describes some disadvantages to using barriers like riprap and sea walls, and it gives an example of a site where willows were planted to prevent erosion. A retired banker recalls a development that had to be destroyed because it was built on an unstable cliff. 21:21 Advice -- This section recommends that prospective buyers visit a property in the winter when sea levels are higher and that they consult an engineering geologist. The video contains interviews with the following people: 03:58 Jonathan Allan, a coastal geologist with the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries 04:47 Paul Komar, then a marine geologist at Oregon State University 05:27 Tuba Ozkan-Haller, an oceanographer at OSU 11:14 James Good, then a coastal hazards specialist with Oregon Sea Grant 11:43 Lisa Phipps, then a planner with the Tillamook County Department of Community Development 12:09 Diane Ostrander, then a real estate agent with Prudential Taylor & Taylor Realty Co. 13:50 Onno Husing, then the executive director the Oregon Coastal Zone Management Association 15:36 Jeff Harrington, then an engineering manager at HLB & Associates Inc. 16:59 Don Barth, a retired banker and real estate agent 18:30 Jeff Schons, a co-owner of Nestucca Ridge Development Inc. 19:56 Matt Spangler, then the director of the Lincoln County Department of Planning and Development 22:09 Margaret Sommer, a 2002 Sea Grant fellow with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife 23:39 Steve Williams, then a coastal shores specialist with Oregon's Department of Land Conservation and Development The video is also available for purchase as a DVD at https://secure.touchnet.net/C20159_us....
