The sugar mill owners, in economic crisis, did not accept the elevation of Recife to the category of town, as this gave more autonomy and power to the merchants. The peddlers, on the other hand, wanted more recognition and commercial freedom. The conflict reveals the social and economic tensions between the agrarian elite and the commercial bourgeoisie in colonial Brazil.
