According to an announcement from the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office on July 7th, Italian authorities have arrested two people, including a former member of the country's intelligence community, on charges of transferring classified information to a Russian spy. Prosecutors say the main suspect is a 59-year-old former officer of the Carabinieri Gendarmerie who previously worked within the Italian intelligence system. He is accused of transferring classified information and illegally accessing information and telecommunications systems. In addition to the two arrested, five other individuals are under investigation as part of an inquiry launched in May 2025. Prosecutors say the main suspect received money to transfer classified information to a Russian spy, using sources including four active-duty Italian military personnel. The Russian spy allegedly involved in the case is believed to currently enjoy diplomatic immunity in Italy.
