8 Juillet 1991 : Gnassingbé Eyadema ouvre officiellement la Conférence Nationale
Three weeks have passed since the June 12th agreements. Amidst hesitations and setbacks, the day so eagerly awaited by the democratic forces finally arrives. Eyadema appears at the podium of the Palace of Renewal (now the Lomé Congress Palace) and delivers a speech in which he clings, somewhat pitifully, to what he continues to consider the achievements of his quarter-century-old regime.
