I keep coming back to that paradox — because it tells you everything about the man. Marcus Aurelius was someone who studied Epictetus as a slave's antidote to absolute power, watched Antoninus Pius for two decades to learn what patient governance looked like, brought books and philosophical correspondence to a military camp on the Danube while simultaneously commanding a war, processed legal petitions from individual citizens by hand during a plague that killed five million people, warned himself in writing against becoming the very Caesar he already was, and used the certainty of his own death not to produce despair but to cut away everything that did not matter — leaving only the present moment and the choice made in it.
