De Slag om Frankrijk (1940) – hoe de Duitsers Frankrijk zo snel versloegen...

The Battle of France (May 10–June 25, 1940) was a stunning and swift German victory over France and its Allies, resulting in the fall of France in just six weeks. This defeat was characterized by Blitzkrieg, a German military strategy that combined fast-moving infantry, tanks, and air power to overwhelm and outmaneuver the enemy. Despite possessing one of the largest armies in Europe and a strong defensive position with the Maginot Line, France was overwhelmed by Germany's tactical innovation. The French high command anticipated a repeat of the static trench warfare of World War I and focused heavily on their defenses along the French-German border. However, Germany bypassed these defenses by launching an invasion through the Ardennes Forest, an area the French considered impassable to a large force. This allowed German forces to bypass the Maginot Line and encircle French and British troops. Once German forces broke through at Sedan, the French lines quickly crumbled. The French leadership was divided and slow to react, and their troops were ill-prepared for the speed and coordination of the German attack. The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) played a crucial role in the defense, but they were quickly overwhelmed. As the French defense collapsed, the British forces were forced to withdraw to Dunkirk, where more than 300,000 Allied soldiers were evacuated in a massive rescue operation known as Operation Dynamo.
