Ossetia: the heart of the Caucasus

Ossetia is a region of the Central Caucasus, located on both sides of the Main Caucasian ridge, mainly inhabited by Ossetians - an Iranian-speaking people, descendants of the Alanian nomads. Currently, Ossetians are Christians. Nevertheless, the Ossetians have preserved their ancient pagan rituals. From the XIV century to the middle of the XVII century, Ossetia existed as an absolutely closed mountainous territory, which did not have cities, education, and writing. In those days the Ossetians lived very poorly due to the lack of fertile land. In 1774, medieval Ossetia became part of the Russian Empire. The construction of roads and tunnels gave an impetus to economic development. After the collapse of the USSR, Ossetia faced difficult times. Nevertheless, the amazing nature of the region contributes to the development of tourism in these places.
