Carbon Fibre Rear Diffuser Install! | 150 Motorsport | Focus RS
The latest carbon mod for my MK3 Focus RS! After completing the carbon fiber front end where I replaced all the matt plastics on the front bumper with lovely carbon fibre, including front splitter, fog light surrounds and number plate garnish, now the time has come to match this on the rear end with the carbon fiber diffuser from 150 Motorsport! I picked this up a while back when I discovered 150 Motorsport as they were claiming to make things to order but were charging prices much closer to the cheap stuff from eBay or AliExpress so I thought I would give them a shot! Out of the box it was clear that this may not quite be the case as the carbon diffuser was send from China directly and there is a little dimple in the middle for a gel badge that the other cheap stuff also has - but still, I give them the benefit of the doubt and crack on with with the install. The carbon looked good on the surface - no visible blemishes and seems to be 'real' carbon (rather than carbon fibre laminated fiberglass for example). The first thing to do was to get the surface prepped which consists of cleaning before ceramic coating using my signature combo of Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light as the hard base layer and then topped with the pro level Carbon Collective Nero self healing top layer. Then it is out to the car where I first remove the rear bumper. Some think you can replace the diffuser without removing th bumper but I have been told by others with experience that if you try, you will break all the clips, so off it comes! That isn't too bad of a process but I do have some bolts/screws that are corroding which caused some minor headaches and I found that my heat shield is on it's last legs, but still not bad! Getting the stock diffuser out requires a bit of technique working out to get the clips out but I show you how I do it which actually isn't too difficult in the end - if you are doing this, just take your time! Onto getting the 150 Motorsport carbon diffuser installed and this is where my mood changed a bit, from fun excitement to disappointment and frustration. The theory is pretty simple - push the new carbon diffuser into the clip hole locations and then just do the reverse of removing the stock diffuser - simple right? Not so with this. I start getting the clips located to find that they are too big so are a nightmare to try and force into the holes. Then at the same time, there is a curvature to the rear bumper that 150 Motorsport doesn't seem to have accounted for correctly so this means once you get a couple of clips located on one side - they pop out on the other side - so frustrating! I can only assume the stock bumper handles this by being more flexible than the carbon but anyways, I get it done by being rather forceful which is not ideal and then onto the rest of the clips only to find that the holes are not the right size and have to be drilled out - awesome sauce. Then on top of that, there are some that don't line up correctly which makes for even more hassle getting the final bit of the install done. Overall, these fitment issues got on my nerves and so I wouldn't recommend, even though this is much cheaper than the competition. I feel that it could well be worth it to pay a bit extra to not have the fitment issues but then again, I don't have experience of the competition such as Seibon or Ventus Veloce - if you do, let us know! 150 Motorsport say about the Carbon Fibre Rear Diffuser: Engineered for style and performance, this after-market, made-to-order carbon fibre & fibre composite rear diffuser is designed to enhance aerodynamics of the MK3 Focus RS, providing maximum downforce and stability.
