Optimising Age of Weaning Cattle – Producer Demonstration Site Results

This 10-minute video presents the final learnings from the ASHEEP & BEEF Producer Demonstration Site (PDS) project “Optimising Age of Weaning Cattle,” funded by Meat & Livestock Australia ‪@meatandlivestock‬. Featuring insights from lead producer Nick Ruddenklau (Epasco Farms) and veterinarian Dr Enoch Bergman (Swans Veterinary Services) ‪@EnochtheCowVet‬, who facilitated the PDS. The project aimed to demonstrate how early weaning can be used as a management tool to improve productivity, maintain breeder condition, and optimise feed allocation under commercial farming conditions. Delivered across the Esperance region of Western Australia, the PDS involved demonstration sites and producer collaboration over multiple seasons from 2023-2026. Key concepts explored in this video: Using early weaning to manage seasonal feed constraints Maintaining calf growth performance under early weaning systems Improving or protecting breeder body condition Practical considerations for implementing early weaning on-farm This project was delivered by ASHEEP & BEEF with support from Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) through the Producer Demonstration Site (PDS) program, which supports producers to see, adapt and adopt proven management practices.
