Founded in 1991, Orania was established as a separate community for Afrikaners, a group of South Africans descended from Dutch, French, and German settlers who speak Afrikaans as their first language. The town's founders were motivated by a desire to preserve Afrikaner culture and language, which they saw as under threat in post-apartheid South Africa.
