A Legend from Salta Those who preserve ancient memories tell of a beautiful city once known as Nuestra Señora de Talavera de Esteco, now vanished, and cursed is the area where its remains lie. Before recounting the many stories surrounding its disappearance, let's learn about this curious city. 📜👑⚔️ The city was founded, according to some, by Alonso de Rivera. It is said that, as a key stop on the route for the trade of precious metals, food, livestock, and slaves between Upper Peru and the Río de la Plata, the city grew rapidly wealthy, to the point that its inhabitants succumbed to pride, greed, and ostentation. (Some claim that part of this wealth came from secret deposits that remain hidden to this day.) Everything glittered with gold and silver, even the horseshoes, saddles, and stirrups. Its inhabitants, captivated by their magnificent riches, valued little anything that didn't satisfy their luxuries, ignoring the poor who lived nearby and cruelly abusing the enslaved Indians. Because of such abundance, the city gained political, religious, and commercial importance, which, as often happens, stirred petty interests and power struggles. Beyond the many legends and myths surrounding the catastrophe that befell it, these struggles likely played a significant role in its sudden destruction. As is well known, abundance leads to vanity, vanity to lust and debauchery. This seems to have been the case with the city, alarming priests and bishops to the point that Bishop Fray Melchor Maldonado de Saavedra filed a complaint with the Audiencia of Charcas denouncing the depravity and accusing the people of pacts with the devil and various forms of witchcraft. Then, according to some records, on September 13, 1692, the entire city disappeared. Some say it was due to an earthquake, others to fire, or a raid by indigenous groups, although many accounts tell of a humble old preacher who appeared in the city one day, warning that if people did not change their behavior, they would all perish. No one gave him food or help, except for a very poor woman with a newborn child. Seeing such arrogance and finding his words met with ridicule, the old man warned the good woman that the next day the city would be destroyed by a violent burst of fire followed by an earthquake, and that to save herself she must flee with her child without looking back, no matter what she heard. At dawn, the woman took the child in her arms and set off, but alas! Upon hearing the roar and the terrified screams, she couldn't help but turn around, and in that very instant, she and the child were turned to stone. They say that nothing remained of the city, except for tormented souls that haunt the area, haunting anyone who dares approach, and the woman and her child, now turned to stone. Many claim that each year the woman takes a step toward Salta, the place she must reach one day.
