On June 24, two earthquakes struck northern Venezuela, causing residential buildings along the coast to collapse and reducing entire apartments to piles of rubble and debris. Among those buildings was the Delfin family home, where Winder and Devi lost their mother along with several other relatives. In the early days, hope remained that survivors might be found. The boys returned to the site of the collapse and participated in the digging themselves, using simple tools, in an attempt to reach their mother.
