MC Lyte: 'Hip-hop Is Only Bringing Back Good Memories To Me' | Interview (1) | TMF
Lana Michele Moorer, known by her stage name MC Lyte, is a pioneering American rapper, DJ, entrepreneur, and actress. She rose to prominence in the late 1980s, breaking barriers as the first female rapper to release a full solo album, "Lyte as a Rock," in 1988. Her debut album included hits like "10% Dis" and "Paper Thin." Throughout her career, MC Lyte achieved numerous milestones, such as joining the Stop the Violence Movement in 1989 and contributing to the number-one single "Self Destruction." Her second album, "Eyes on This" (1989), featured the single "Cha Cha Cha." In 1991, "Poor Georgie" marked her first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100. Lyte's 1993 single "Ruffneck" earned her the first gold certification by a solo female rapper from the RIAA. Collaborations with artists like Janet Jackson, Queen Latifah, and Missy Elliott showcased her versatility. She received a Grammy nomination in 2004 for "Ride Wit Me." Beyond her musical accomplishments, MC Lyte has collaborated with mainstream artists, received accolades such as the BET Hip Hop Awards' "I Am Hip Hop" Icon Lifetime Achievement, and VH1 Hip Hop Honors. In 2014, she made history as the first female artist to perform hip-hop at the White House. In 2016, Harvard University awarded her the W. E. B. Du Bois Medal for her contributions to African and African-American studies. MC Lyte's influence extends beyond music, as she has worked in voiceover, writing, and acting. In 2022, she made her directorial debut with the short film "Break Up In Love." Committed to philanthropy, she is involved with various charities, including her foundation, Hip Hop Sisters. Billboard and Vibe recognized her as one of the 50 greatest rappers in 2023, solidifying her enduring impact on the hip-hop genre. Watch more TMF videos ► https://bit.ly/MoreTMF Join us.
