로버트 스미스슨, 시각 예술의 공간성과 텍스트 예술의 시간성 사이의 경계를 허물다

Robert Smithson regarded language not merely as a medium for conveying ideas, but as a physical material akin to the materials of sculpture. He emphasized the materiality of language, explaining that if one gazes at words for a long time, they appear as particles containing fragmented terrain or voids. His essays are not merely supplementary explanations or critiques of plastic art, but constitute an essential part of artistic practice alongside sculpture, film, and photography. For instance, in works such as *Spiral Jetty*, the piece is completed by forming a chain of signifiers that includes not only the actual structure but also films, photographs, maps, and his own texts. Smithson strongly rejected the modernist concept of "progress" that permeated art and society as a whole. He viewed the future as a "desert" and sought to visualize "entropy" (the loss of energy), the principle of death underlying time, through his essay *Entropy and the New Monument*. Unlike the monuments of the past that aspired to eternity, he presented a "new monument" that subdivides time into seconds and demonstrates the extinction of time. Instead of the linear concept of time representing progress, he preferred a static and crystalline view of time inspired by geology and science fiction. For him, time became a motionless "place," a process that shattered classical concepts of time and space. Smithson visited ordinary industrial and construction sites in Passaic, New Jersey, describing them as "ruins in reverse." Through this landscape, where buildings appeared to rise as ruins even before completion, he revealed a utopian emptiness and an entropic state outside of history. Consequently, Smithson's work broke down the traditional boundaries between the spatiality of visual art and the temporality of textual art. His writing is not merely an object to be read; rather, it combines with visual images to form an intertextual structure, thereby revealing cross-sections of fragmented reality. These perspectives demonstrate that Smithson did not confine his existence as an artist solely to the end product known as the "work," but rather placed value on the process of working within time itself. 00:00 The Medium of Writing 00:30 Strata of Language 01:00 Entropy 01:50 Geological Time 02:48 Out of the Art Museum 03:30 Passaic, New Jersey 04:00 Reverse Ruins Source Gintz, Claude, La place de l'écrit dans l'œuvre de Robert Smithson, in Robert Smithson: le paysage entropique 1960-1973, Centre Julio Gonzalez, 1993.
