Scarfing is very useful in boatbuilding, because: You often need long pieces of wood, for example for planking your boat. Sometimes these pieces are longer than the timber you have on hand. Often, boat parts have curved shapes that can be difficult to create using commercially available wood. Using scarf joints, the grain direction can be controlled. This results in stronger pieces than what is possible using straight grown wood. Cutting a scarf joint is fast and easy to do with traditional hand tools.
