The brake light switch wasn't working properly. After replacing the bulb (video link below), which didn't work, I solved the problem by inspecting and cleaning the brake light switch in the rear brake pedal. Here's the complete guide. It involves disassembling the brake pedal, cleaning all the components, including the crucial parts that complete the electrical circuit, and finally reassembling it completely. There's no front brake light switch on this or previous Vespa models.
