It was based on the Centurion tank chassis and armed with a 183mm high velocity gun, which was one of the largest calibre guns ever fitted to a tank. The FV 4005 was developed as part of the "Conqueror" project, which aimed to develop a tank destroyer capable of destroying heavily-armoured Soviet tanks. However, the project was ultimately cancelled in the early 1960s due to cost and technical issues. Only a few FV 4005 prototypes were built, and they were never used in combat. Today, one example of the FV 4005 is preserved at the Tank Museum in Bovington, England.
