The promise of a Palestinian state has been on the diplomatic horizon for about 80 years. And yet, after all that time, it couldn’t feel further away. This week, the UK joined France in announcing it will recognize a Palestinian state in September — albeit with certain caveats. There is also a joint Saudi-French initiative pushing for the recognition of a Palestinian state in September. The Prime Minister says statehood must be linked to future peace and stability. Hamas must release the hostages, disarm, and accept it will have no role in a future government. If it does not, recognition can be revoked. The US and Israel argue that any move towards statehood is a reward for Hamas and punishes the victims of the October 7 attacks.
