Because if you died tomorrow and the family had to fill in the granite, would there be anything to carve beyond a hyphen between two dates? We finish the survey of Scripture first. Then we walk through a Romanist cemetery. Thousands of stones. Polished granite. Bronze plaques. Names taller than I am. And almost no Scripture. Almost no hope of resurrection. Almost no reference to the Savior. Just last names, dates, and wars. And a quiet confession carved in stone about what those people actually trusted. The difference between a good memorial and a bad one is the same difference between the gospel and a religion. One points to a Person. The other points to a system. One says hitherto hath the LORD helped us. The other says rest in peace and hope for the best. We are not trying to rest in peace.
