Violence in Cuba skyrocketed this Sunday in the La Victoria neighborhood, where a young man was assaulted in broad daylight and robbed of his electric motorcycle by criminals armed with a knife and a firearm. The robbery occurred surrounded by neighbors who filmed the scene without intervening, in yet another example of the collapse of security under the Castro regime. The attack is not an isolated incident. In recent days, similar assaults have been reported against people who receive remittances and goods from exile: electric motorcycles, solar panels, and money sent by relatives. According to reports circulating on social media, the victim tried to defend himself, but the assailants chased him with a firearm and a knife while no one from the neighborhood came to his aid. The situation worsens with even more serious cases. According to citizen reports, a person was stabbed to death for the solar panels on his home, and a puppeteer was threatened with a knife on Havana's Malecón. The reports all point to a pattern: anyone who possesses anything of value—almost always thanks to aid sent from abroad—becomes a direct target of the crime that proliferates amidst the misery. The underlying cause is the economic and social crisis that the Cuban government, led by the unelected dictator Miguel Díaz-Canel, has been unable to reverse. Extreme shortages, blackouts, and a lack of opportunities have led to a scenario where theft and violence have become normalized, while the authorities downplay or silence these incidents.
