On the one hand, this coincides with reality: it is not only known for Johannes Brahms that he withdrew to summer retreats in order to give free rein to his inspiration undisturbed by the hustle and bustle of the Viennese city. At the end of this intensive phase of composing, the result is often one or even several compositions. This was also the case with the Second Piano Concerto, which he completed in the summer of 1881 in Pressbaum, Lower Austria, after having sketched it the year before in Bad Ischl. Usually, the program notes then record the path to the premiere, namely usually the one or other letter to friends or publishers already during the creation, then the return from the summer retreat and finally the first public presentation of the new work. Essentially, this is also the case with the second Brahms concerto. To his good friend Elisabeth von Herzogenberg, the composer wrote in a typically ironic tone: "I want to announce that I have written a quite a little piano concerto with a quite a little delicate scherzo." This is indeed unusual: piano concertos usually have three movements, and a scherzo usually appears more in symphonies. In considering how and where to play the concerto in public for the first time, Brahms finds an offer from Hans von Bülow extremely convenient. The pianist and conductor had become court music director in Meiningen the year before, where there was a phenomenal orchestra. Brahms played through the new concerto intensively there with Bülow and his musicians and was thus able to correct many passages directly. Budapest, however, was scheduled for the premiere, and what followed that November 9, 1881, puts the image of Brahms' solitary desk life into perspective. By the end of January, he had traveled across northern Europe, playing the concerto as soloist a total of 14 times, including in Zurich, Strasbourg, Breslau, Berlin, Hamburg and Amsterdam - an energy-sapping ordeal given the long and uncomfortable travel distances of the time.
