Durkheim, Socializacion Primaria y Secundaria

A very brief, curious, and chaotic overview of the sociological concepts of primary and secondary socialization, as well as media socialization. 🧠 SOCIALIZATION | Primary and Secondary Socialization: How Society Constitutes Us as Subjects How do we become members of a society? In this video, we analyze the socialization process from a sociological perspective, examining the distinction between primary and secondary socialization, its mechanisms, its agents, and its role in the constitution of identity and social order. ▸ Socialization The process by which individuals incorporate the norms, values, beliefs, roles, and dispositions of the society into which they are born. It is not a passive process of molding: it involves an active internalization that makes the social world subjectively meaningful. ▸ Primary Socialization The first and most fundamental phase of socialization, which occurs in early childhood within the family or primary group. The child does not choose their socializers, nor can they critically distance themselves from what they internalize: the world they are shown is presented as the only possible world, with a solidity and certainty that no subsequent socialization will ever match. ▸ Significant Others Central figures in primary socialization: parents, caregivers, siblings. Their influence is decisive because the child emotionally identifies with them before being able to evaluate or question what they transmit. What significant others say, value, and do is internalized with an affective intensity that grants it the character of objective reality. ▸ Internalization The process by which the external social world becomes a subjective world. The individual not only learns to behave according to norms: they internalize them, incorporating them as natural truths. Internalization is the mechanism that makes both social reproduction and personal identity possible. ▸ The Generalized Other A concept borrowed from George Herbert Mead. In the course of primary socialization, the child moves from identifying with specific significant others to internalizing a generalized social perspective: the norms, roles, and expectations of society as a whole. This is the condition of possibility for moral consciousness and social participation. ▸ Identity For sociology, identity is not a given but the result of the socialization process. It is formed at the intersection between what society defines as possible and desirable and what the individual internalizes as their own. It is simultaneously subjective and socially produced. ▸ Secondary Socialization The process by which the already socialized individual is introduced into specific sectors of the social world: institutions, roles, knowledge, and particular subcultures. It occurs throughout life and includes school, work, religious institutions, peer groups, and the media. ▸ Institutional Subcultures Secondary socialization introduces the individual to subcultures with their own norms, languages, hierarchies, and forms of legitimation. Each institution transmits a set of specialized knowledge and specific dispositions that the individual must incorporate to participate in it. ▸ Agents of Socialization Instances and groups through which socialization takes place. In primary socialization, the central agent is the family. In secondary socialization, the school, peers, media, religious institutions, the labor market, and, increasingly, digital platforms are involved. ▸ Resocialization A process of intense secondary socialization that involves abandoning a previous identity and constructing a new one. It occurs in contexts such as total institutions (Goffman), religious conversions, migration processes, or radical role transformations. It requires solid structures of plausibility to support the new identity. ▸ Structures of Plausibility A concept developed by Berger and Luckmann. Every identity requires a social base that confirms and sustains it: a reference group that shares the same values, beliefs, and definitions of reality. Without a structure of plausibility, identity becomes fragile and unstable. ▸ Socialization and Social Reproduction Socialization is the central mechanism by which societies reproduce themselves over time. At the same time, it is not a mechanical process of reproduction: individuals reinterpret, negotiate, and sometimes transform what they incorporate, opening up space for social change. ─────────────────────────────── 🔗 KEYWORDS ─────────────────────────────── primary and secondary socialization | Berger and Luckmann socialization | significant others | generalized other (Mead) | internalization and identity | agents of socialization | resocialization | total institutions (Goffman) | family and socialization school and socialization |
