The first one is – recovery from pain. They ask, “When will I be pain free? When can I sleep peacefully without pain?” The second type of recovery is the recovery after which they can do normal daily activities. They ask, “When can I get up on my own, go to the toilet without calling anybody for help, when can I get down from the bed on my own and when can I walk around the house?” The third type of recovery is the recovery to resume day-to-day activities and attending office. The fourth type of recovery is the recovery to start doing physical exercises, gym and all other sports and fitness activities. Let us come to each of these things one by one. No.1: Recovery from pain – As I told you, most of the hernia operations, be it laparoscopic or open, the pain management techniques that we have seen, have advanced over a period of time. In the present day, there are excellent pain management techniques that we use, where majority of our patients are pain free the following day after the hernia operation. This means that they are able to lie down comfortably, turn around and have a peaceful night sleep without continuous pain. We use various techniques such as epidural analgesia, or nerve blocks, or around-the-clock analgesics to achieve this. The second recovery – which is recovery for their independent daily need activities such as getting out of bed, walking to the toilet and walking around the house. Most patients undergoing laparoscopic or open hernia repair are able to do this from the next day of the operation. If the patient is very elderly or obese, they might take another couple of days to resume their daily care activities around their house. Resuming office, outdoor and routine activities - usually takes around a week to 10 days for a laparoscopic repair, and may be two to three weeks for an open hernia operation. At the end of one week, a laparoscopic hernia patient is able to drive to his office, carry out his regular work, come back and have a normal life. In open hernia operations, patients generally take two to three weeks to resume these activities. With regard to resuming of fitness, sports, gym and exercise activities - it varies from patient to patient and depending on the type of hernia repair, there is a difference. Laparoscopic groin hernia patients can resume their regular exercises such as stretching and cardio exercises, one month from the time of surgery and after three months of their surgery, they can start weight training and other high intensity exercises. Open hernia patients are generally advised to stay away from heavy weightlifting and high intensity exercises for a period of at least three to six months depending on the type of repair. However, they can resume walking, regular cardio exercises and stretching exercises including yoga four weeks from the time of the original surgery.
