Unpopular AlpenFury Opinions! | Wonderland Weekly: November 2, 2025

I'm AlpenFurious about 2025! On the last day of the non-WinterFest season, I reflect on 2025 as a whole with a particular focus on the new record-breaking launch coaster, AlpenFury. Spoiler: I'm not a big fan. I can forgive a lot. And I have, seeing as I reluctantly renewed my season pass for 2026. But there have been countless "minor" changes that have drastically reduced the enjoyment of Canada's Wonderland for myself, my family, and many others. More than I think the park realizes. The pay-per-use lockers on AlpenFury are disappointing, but somewhat understandable to speed up dispatches. But adding them to Yukon Striker, a ride whose previous loose article system was award winning? That's absurd, in my opinion, and could have significantly reduced income from the nearby Splash Works lockers now that there's a significantly cheaper option just outside the water park. Keeping Grande World Eatery, one of the park's few indoor, air-conditioned locations closed for a good portion of the summer? (And no, it was apparently not due to a kitchen fire.) This made the lacklustre variety of food this summer even more apparent. Silently cancelling the one new event (The Great BrewBQ) for the season? Removing Time Warp over the off-season with zero advance notice? Having kids' rides closed on weekdays for part of the summer including DURING KidZfest, a kid-focussed event? Rides scheduled (signs were made) to open hours after the park's daily opening? No notice about these on the website or through social media, though, for fear of negative reactions. I maintain it is so much more important in the long run to be honest with your guests/customers. Yes, there are budget constraints. It's fine to admit there may be some temporary disruptions to traditional service because of that. Don't let guests get to the park and discover something for the first time after they've paid to get in. You will lose their trust. On that note, the Halloween Haunt mazes requiring an additional fee for the first time ever. I understand the reasoning and could have even supported the decision had it been handled differently. But the company has built up guests' expectations for what "Halloween Haunt" entails and sold season passes under that framework. Making the change two months before the event starts isn't good enough and it's dishonest to say that counts as ample notice. I know I'm not alone as I've had messages of support from employees, season pass holders, and single-day visitors alike. (Share holders aren't happy either, as I predicted with the Haunt upcharge.) Of course many people are happy about AlpenFury, especially hardcore coaster enthusiasts who go to parks seeking the most extreme thrills. I don't want to diminish their feelings. I'm happy they have something made for them. I just wish it didn't come at the expense of one of the most iconic and enduring images in theme park history: Wonder Mountain. From the moment I saw the blast coaster concept, I was concerned. It looked like something I would have dreamed of as a child, but not something that should actually happen. I expressed my concerns in a video, and sadly AlpenFury fulfilled every one of those concerns. It objectively makes the mountain look smaller, diminishing the park icon's impact when guests enter Front Gate and distracting from the actual mountain, designed to reflect the natural beauty of Canada, from the Rockies to Niagara Falls. It upsets me every time I see it from Front Gate. And I am holding back tears when I think about the fact my kids will never get to see the majestic Wonder Mountain at the top of International Street without that earring. Other minor things: I can't think of any new trees this year, and that's after removing so many last year. AlpenFury's fencing and shade structure are both incomplete and ill-fitting. No new summer shows/events. Poorly trained/informed staff (sketchy safety checks, issues with PassPerks, etc.). Confusing/underdeveloped story for AlpenFury. So much more but I've run out of space...
