Frederick Childe Hassam: Pioneer of American Impressionism and Urban Scenes Frederick Childe Hassam (1859–1935) was a renowned American Impressionist painter whose work left an indelible mark on the art world. Born in Dorchester, he started his career as an engraver and watercolor painter, studying at the Lowell Institute and joining the Boston Art Club. In 1886, Hassam traveled to Paris to study at the Académie Julian, where he was deeply influenced by the city’s galleries and museums. Settling in New York City in 1889, Hassam became known for his urban scenes and developed close friendships with artists Julian Alden Weir and John Henry Twachtman. Versatile in oil, tempera, watercolor, pastel, engraving, and illustration, Hassam bought a house in East Hampton in 1919, where he lived until his passing in 1935.
