Her father was sent from North Korea to East Germany (to Leipzig and Dresden) in the 1950s as a politically loyal student before fleeing to the West before the Berlin Wall was built—a decision for which his family in North Korea paid a terrible price. Her mother fled to the South during the Korean War and came to Germany in the 1960s as a nurse, where the two were eventually brought together in Karlsruhe.
