Spiruline, Traditions millénaires

Spirulina, or dié, is an algae that originates from the shores of Lake Chad and is cultivated by Kanembu women. Recognized for its numerous beneficial properties, it is used today in treatments for malnutrition, as a dietary supplement, and in cosmetics. Through its Biosphere and Heritage of Lake Chad project, UNESCO supports local communities in their green economy projects related to the production of this algae. This documentary traces the history of spirulina, from its discovery in the Lake Chad basin to its current uses, and highlights the challenges of its sustainable conservation. It pays tribute to the women of Lake Chad who introduced spirulina to the world. This video, based on the work of Wafik Ghommidh and the archives of the Brandily couple, was supported by the Biosphere and Heritage of Lake Chad project https://fr.unesco.org/biopalt
