MIKOTOー命 | The Moon Deity Awakens — Japanese Zen Music for Deep Sleep & Meditation
命 MIKOTO – The Light That Walks Alone A song for the one who watches the world from afar. In the Shinto tradition of Japan, Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto (月讀命) is the deity of the moon and the realm of night. According to the 8th-century chronicles Kojiki (712 AD) and Nihon Shoki (720 AD), he was born from the right eye of the creator god Izanagi as he washed away the impurity of Yomi, the underworld. Together with his sister Amaterasu, born from the left eye, and his brother Susano-o, born from the nose, he stands among the three noble children of the highest order. To him was given dominion over the realm of the night — the silent counterpart to the sun. But the story between brother and sister did not end in harmony. By Amaterasu's command, Tsukuyomi descended from the heavens to visit Ukemochi, the goddess of food, who lived upon the earth. Ukemochi received the moon deity with reverence, and prepared a sacred feast — drawing rice from her mouth, fish from the sea, game from the mountains, all from her own body. Tsukuyomi was filled with revulsion. To offer food that had passed through a living mouth seemed to him a defilement of the sacred. In silent fury, he drew his blade and slew the goddess of nourishment where she stood. When Amaterasu learned of what her brother had done, her grief turned to wrath. She declared that she would never again look upon his face. From that day, the sun and the moon were severed — one walking the sky by day, the other by night, eternally apart. The light returned to the world. But it returned divided. — The character 命 (MIKOTO) carries two voices at once. As a title — mikoto — it is the ancient honorific given only to the noble deities of the Shinto pantheon: a name spoken with reverence, never carelessly. As a word — inochi — it means life itself: the breath, the pulse, the tide. The kanji has been read many ways across the centuries. To me — and to this channel — it has always felt like the quiet sovereignty of a presence that asks for nothing. The moon does not need to be seen to be sacred. It does not need to be praised to govern the tide. This is one way to hear an old story. The night belongs to everyone who has ever chosen to walk apart. — Shura of Silence ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📜 Chapters 0:00 01. The Right Eye Opens Beneath the Stars 4:25 02.
