GARY W. GALLAGHER is the John L. Nau III Professor in the History of the American Civil War at the University of Virginia. He earned his graduate degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. He has published widely in the field of Civil War-era history, most recently "Causes Won, Lost and Forgotten: How Hollywood and Popular Art Shape What We Know about the Civil War," "The Union War, and Becoming Confederates: Paths to a New National Loyalty." In 2010-2012, he held the Cavaliers' Distinguished Teaching Professorship, the highest teaching award conveyed by the University. PETER ONUF is senior fellow at the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Professor of History, Emeritus at the University of Virginia. He is author/editor of eleven books, including most recently, "Nations, Markets, and War: Modern History and the American Civil War." In 2008-09, he was the Harold Vyvyan Harmsworth Professor of American History at the University of Oxford.
