This is the main station of Tsu City, the city with the shortest name in Japan. While many stations across the country are written in kanji with only one character, this station is the only one with only one character in kana. Tsu is said to mean port, and this is derived from the fact that many of the place names starting with "Tsu" scattered throughout the country flourished as port towns. The station is an above-ground station with three side and island platforms and six tracks. It connects to the JR Line and the Ise Railway Line, allowing transfers without going through ticket gates. Platforms are numbered consecutively: Ise Railway Line (Platform 1), JR Line (Platforms 2-4), and Kintetsu Line (Platforms 5-6). All trains except the Shimakaze Limited Express stop here.
