Why the F-1 Engine Needed a Gas Generator

The F-1 engine was not simply fed by opening valves. Each engine needed a gas generator to burn a small amount of RP-1 and Liquid Oxygen, drive the turbine, power the turbopump, and force propellant into the main thrust chamber at the required pressure and flow rate. This video explains why the gas generator was essential to making the Saturn V’s first-stage engines work.
