The Music of Elmer Bernstein (2006)
On September 8, 2006, "A Musical Tribute to Elmer Bernstein" was held in Bovard Auditorium in conjunction with the opening of "The Music of Elmer Bernstein: An American Soundtrack"—an exhibition in USC's Doheny Memorial Library. The exhibit, which highlighted the legendary music of Elmer Bernstein, the Academy Award-winning film composer and former professor at USC, featured handwritten scores, photographs, LPs, correspondence, awards, and ephemera housed in the USC Libraries: https://archives.usc.edu/repositories... The Musical Tribute featured performances by the Thornton Orchestra and Thornton Jazz Orchestra, conducted by David Spear, of the fanfare to "National Geographic," and themes to "The Great Escape," "Stripes," "Far From Heaven," "The Man with the Golden Arm," Sweet Smell of Success," "The Ten Commandments," "To Kill a Mockingbird," and "The Magnificent Seven" among others. KUSC Host Jim Svejda, film director John Landis, and conductor Peter Bernstein (son of Elmer) introduced the program.
