Colorado Legend

his 16mm color Eastman Rev safety film is an experimental film about a legend of Colorado history made in 1960 by Stan Brakhage (Cinematographer, Editor, Director) and Western Cine Production Denver (Producer) for the State of Colorado Department of Public Relations. A sticker on the inside of the can describes the film: "A tale of two gold miners of the old west who struck it rich. The lonely life made them heavy drinkers and one night when the heavy, silent Dutchman wouldn't talk to the feisty little Irishman, he was knifed to death. The Irishman was hanged and the wereabouts of the mine lies buried with him." Credits include Walt Conley (Guitar, Vocals, Narration), Dave Ricker (Banjo), George Nyberg (Writer), Herman Urschel (Sound Recording), and Hal Haney (Supervisor). The film measures roughly 400 feet and has a run time of about 11:00, with a variable area optical soundtrack. It is held in the History Colorado's moving image collections (Accession #86.242.67).
