It is organized by the Chilean National Professional Football Association (Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional - ANFP), which belongs to the Chilean Football Federation (Federación de Fútbol de Chile - FFCh). It was considered by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) as one of the strongest leagues in the world in 1992, 1994, and 1999, when it achieved its best ever ranking: 9th place, as well as 10th place in 2011 and 2012. In 2024, it was ranked as the 37th best league in the world, becoming the eighth best football league in South America.
