I cast on from 21L to 20 R and did 10 repeats of the pattern plus the starting and ending rows. For a blanket that measures roughly 30x30 inches, cast on from stitches 57L to 56R and do 34 repeats of the pattern. You must cast on a multiple of 8 needles plus 1. The maximum amount of needles you can use is 145 but you would not be able to use the Needle Beetle unless you took the carriage on and off every time you selected, so you would have to use the 3x1 selector.
