Finding the Ancient Canoe - A Walkers Log

🥾 Walking Somerset A–Z — Episode 7 G is for Godney — Castles, Canoes & Dehydration For the letter G, I headed to the wonderfully flat and suspiciously wet world of Godney. Starting at the excellent Sheppey Inn, the walk crossed the Somerset Levels towards the remains of Fenny Castle — a Norman motte-and-bailey castle that today looks slightly more like an enthusiastic mound. 🏰 The Curiosity Fenny Castle once guarded important routes across the Levels after the Norman conquest. Today it mostly guards: grass sheep and occasional confused walkers 🛶 The Godney Canoe The area is famous for the discovery of the Godney Canoe — an ancient dugout boat found preserved in the peat of the Levels. During the walk I also discovered a large log… which, in worsening dehydration, briefly became a possible archaeological find. 🥵 Conditions on the Levels The walk itself went surprisingly well, although somewhere between Godney and Fenny Castle: ☀ hydration levels dropped 🧭 navigation confidence weakened 🌿 the Levels became increasingly endless Fortunately, recovery was successfully achieved back at the pub. 🍺 The Recovery Operation Return to: The Sheppey Where: fluids were restored dignity partially recovered and the official scoring ceremony resumed 📊 Official Episode Scores 🚶 The Walk: Beautiful but deceptively draining 🧐 Curiosity Index: Ancient canoe + Norman castle = strong score 🌄 Natural Outstanding Beauty (NOB): Huge Levels energy 🔁 Returnability: Yes… with additional water supplies #Somerset, #Godney, #SomersetLevels, #WalkingVlog, #FennyCastle, #Cider, #UKWalking, #SomersetAZ,
