Roland Jupiter 80 VS Roland Jupiter 8 80's Synth Comparison "Jump"
I do not claim any rights to the music in this video. This is merely fair use under Section 107 of the Copyright Act. My Jupiter 8 is the 5th one ever produced. It is an early 12bit version. There have been some complaints that the early Jupiter 8 such as this one has unstable tuning issues. When I created this video, I turned on the JP8 but I forgot to press the oscillator tune button. I also have this patched stored slightly detuned as you can hear in the video. But for the most part it is in tune. I sometimes have to hit the tune button once every 30 minutes on this Jupiter 8 which isn't a big deal at all. I guess I am one of the lucky ones! Here is a comparison of two OBXa patches I have created, one of each on the Jupiter 8 and the Jupiter 80. I tried to get as close as I could to the OBXa patch used on Van Halen's "Jump". I also tried to get both Jupiters to sound as close as possible but in the end, the Jupiter 8 always won out. Notice how the Jupiter 8 has a creamier sound to it than the Jupiter 80. My opinion is that the Jupiter 80 is a great synth and in some cases it can sound somewhat like a Jupiter 8, especially the pads. But, you can do the same with keyboards such as the Alesis Ion and Yamaha AN1X too. One of the disadvantages to the Jupiter 80 is of course the fact that it is not analog, but just as important is the fact that it does not have much real time control over the filters, etc.
