Garden Tasks to Beat the Heat | Zone 7a Morning Prep Before 100°

Zone 7a is about to hit triple digits, so this morning I treated every veggie bed before the heat gets loud. Zone 7a is heading straight into the 90s–100s, so today’s garden tasks were all about protecting JBirds Garden before the heat spikes. I topped all the vegetable beds with a blend of organic raised bed soil, mushroom compost, and perlite to keep roots insulated and breathing. Then I added a Tomato + Veggie granulated fertilizer for slow-release nutrients, soaked everything deep, and sealed the moisture in with a layer of straw mulch. The goal: retain water, slow-release nutrients, and give the whole garden a fighting chance in extreme heat. I also added more companion flowers throughout the garden — marigolds, basil, and a divided lemon balm from Bro — to support pollinators, pest control, and overall plant resilience. Every veggie got treated today: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, pumpkins, patty pan/scallop squash, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, and yellow zucchini. This is the full 8–10 minute walkthrough of the process — simple morning tasks that make a big difference when the heat rolls in. #gardentips #heatwavegardening #zone7a #vegetablegarden #organicgardening #summergarden #soilhealth #gardentasks #raisedbedgarden #mulching #companionplanting #tomatogrowing #peppergrowing #squashgrowing #cucumbergarden #soilprep #gardeningtasks #gardening101 #homesteadgarden #horticulture
