In a new episode of our videocast, Agnieszka Krzemińska and her guest, Dr. Anna Brzezińska, prove that the true history of women is much more complex and surprising than school textbooks teach us. Discussing her latest book, "Patient Genevieves, Shameless Magdalenes," the author shows how the image of women was shaped in bygone centuries and why the story of Mary Magdalene served as a literary and practical antithesis to obedient, submissive wives. We peer behind the walls of religious orders, where nuns and nuns found a rare space for education and intellectual development. Women's convents in the Middle Ages often provided the only escape from the pressures placed on young girls by arranged marriages. We confront this with a completely different dimension of female spirituality, represented by canonization and fervent, desperate prayers for the healing of children. We finally dispel myths of scientific backwardness: Medieval medicine is largely a history of highly skilled female doctors, surgeons, and midwives, whose support was sought by empresses themselves.
